Passive GPS Tracking
In the GPS Vehicle Tracking world, there are two general categories of systems from which to choose, "Active" (also known as Real Time) and “Passive”.
Passive systems are typically limited to vehicle tracking only. Passive units are installed in a vehicle, and the data on the device is manually downloaded from the vehicle at the end of the day, or when the vehicle returns to the home base. Passive systems are useful for companies who do not want to view any information in real time from any computer, and who do not wish to be immediately alerted of unusual or undesired activity during the day or throughout the night.
Unusual activity would consist of vehicle actions such as excessive speeding, entering or exiting defined zones and locations, prolonged idling of vehicle, no movement of vehicle by a particular time, or movement of a vehicle during certain times (nights and weekends. i.e. theft of a vehicle).
Because of the limitations mentioned above, Active Systems are used far more in commercial GPS fleet management, and vehicle tracking (automated vehicle location) solutions.

Active GPS Tracking ("Real Time")
Active GPS systems utilize wireless networks that allow you to receive data from all of the vehicles in your fleet and view the location of any or all of your vehicles in near “real-time”. Real-Time GPS tracking has long been the standard for companies or individuals who wish to monitor fleet vehicles as well as tracking assets (trailers, generators, heavy equipment). These systems are cost-effective, easy to use, and are virtually maintenance free since most require no installation of software on your server or workstation.
The most advanced systems include a wide range of reports and alerts to provide immediate feedback of any unusual or undesired activity. Features of the MARCUS® Real-time GPS AVL systems include 19 user-defined reports, 16 Real Time Alerts, Automated email delivery of reports, vehicle maintenance, routing and driving direction, two way messaging, and 90 days of historical data. Specific reports and alerts include start/stop reports, real-time zone alerts, customer job site alerts, and speed alerts.
